That night in bed, after Estelle had created a new plot for Careless Talk with roles for each of the players, and Horace had wondered whether Reg and Billy would be offered work after all, she said, “How does that Baxter-Salmon woman know my name was Edna Smollett?”
“Maybe you were at school together.”
“You are joking! She’s decades older than me.”
“Decades?”
“Well, considerably older.”
“If you say so.” Horace shifted onto his side.
“She’s very close to Jessamyn. Too close, if you know what I mean? Oh, and that reminds me, Jessamyn Flowers is not only Mrs Puddicombe – Puddi as Wendell calls her – she’s also Mrs Ada Beere. What do you make of that?”
Horace made nothing of it, he was asleep. Estelle sighed and tugged at the blankets, trying to get comfortable, but her mind was whirling with real-identity biographies for the inhabitants of Peony Villas. She stopped at Mr Robbins, though, realising he had the characteristics of a film studio police detective. Perhaps he was a police detective. The young man with him could easily pass as a police constable.
The thought set her back to wondering whether she had enough to make her break for freedom and Exquisite Antiques. She could say she needed to go up to London to see somebody – a specialist perhaps. Hushed feminine implications would serve. There was bound to be an air-raid while she was there, and Estelle Dobson could disappear. Except she’d have to sign a name to a shop lease. Did she really want to go back to being Edna Smollett, the stuck-up madam from Mafeking Terrace? More to the point, did she want to miss the fun and possibilities of filming at Daneman Court? No, not really.
